Do you know anyone whom you’d refer to as White trash? Most likely. Either there’s someone at your job, in your neighborhood, or in your family that you’d throw that label on.

Essentially, White trash is everywhere.

While calling someone White trash might be a mean-spirited way of ridiculing or poking fun at a particular demographic, it can also serve as a way to express disdain about the way someone lives their life. It isn’t as derogatory as using other racial slurs, and in fact, the term has a bit of humor associated with it, making it the focus of pop culture.

Take for instance Jerry Springer, Honey Boo Boo, Kid Rock, Eminem, Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite and even Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon movies.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, white trash is defined as:

“A term used broadly to define a person or group of persons whom embody the concepts of ignorance, racism, violence, alcoholism, poverty, and anglo-saxon ancestry. Similarly used with the term ‘cracker,’ ‘hillbilly’ or ‘redneck’.”

So, using some data crunching, we should be able to measure where the most White trash communities in the state of Pennsylvania are actually located.

After analyzing data, watching too many fist fights and perusing illiterate Facebook comments, we’ve determined these are the most White trash cities in Pennsylvania:

  1. Johnstown
  2. Shamokin
  3. Bradford
  4. Lewistown
  5. Pottsville
  6. McKees Rocks
  7. Corry
  8. New Castle
  9. Towanda
  10. Dallas

Time to take some meth and stay up all night with us as we go through the cities one by one. And before you say we’re some kind of reverse racist, you can also check out the most Ghetto city in Pennsylvania.

How we determined the most white trash cities in Pennsylvania?

Using publicly available government data, as well as Google Maps, we were able to collect the data on the following white trash metrics:

  • Cities where there are lots of white people
  • Cities where residents are poorer than average
  • Cities where a high number of residents are high school dropouts
  • Cities with a high number of single parents
  • High drug use
  • Higher than average Payday Loan Outlets
  • Violent cities (measured in aggravated assaults)
  • Cities with a high number of residents on welfare

We used the government Census for most of the data. For drug use and violence, we used FBI data, and for Cash Advance Outlets, we used Google Maps.

Simple, right?

We limited the analysis to non-CDPs that have over 5,000 people.

Then, we ranked each place from 1 to 142 for each of the white trash criteria.

Next, then averaged all the ranks to create a “white trash index”.

In the end, Johnstown ended up being the the most white trash city in the Keystone State.

1. Johnstown

Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 20,608
% White: 78.06%
Dollar stores: 15th in PA

Toss back a Budweiser, and suck down another Camel, Johnstown, cause you’re the whitest trash of all in Pennsylvania.

Many of the folks in Johnstown smell of cheap cigarettes, and if you grew up in Johnstown, there’s a decent chance you or your date (or both) wore camouflage at your last Valentine’s Day dinner.

Johnstown ranks in the top 10% for several categories, including number of residents on welfare, most amount of high school dropouts, as well as a high number of payday loans per capita.

Don’t laugh, Altoona. You weren’t too far out of the top 10 yourself.

2. Shamokin

Shamokin, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 7,517
Dropout rank: 10th
% on Welfare: 25%

Forget about the orange color of the river in Shamokin. How about the population: The high number of mullets, shag hair cuts, teased out bangs, and the number of people who wear pajamas to Walmart.

Shamokin’s population is as close to 100% white as you can possibly get. If you live here, and you aren’t white, you are most likely trash.

Shamokin was in the top 5 in the state for poor, uneducated white residents, but it ranks fairly low when it comes to single, white moms. So at least they tend to stay together in Shamokin, which is certainly something they should be proud of.

3. Bradford

Bradford, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 8,768
Assaults rank: 6th
Welfare rank: 5th

Little Bradford is along Route 219, near the New York state line. This is one of the whitest cities on this list, and judging by the numbers, this place is pretty damn trashy.

Bradford ranks in the top 5 for three separate white trash metrics: Number of aggravated assaults and poor, white, single mothers on welfare.

If you live in McKean County, there’s a good chance you’ve watched every episode of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” and absolutely swear that CMT is the best channel on cable.

If you even have cable.

4. Lewistown

Lewistown, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 8,297
% White: 92.94%
Drug use 10th in PA

If you and your kid have moved in with your boyfriend after two dates, then you might be from Lewistown. This place ranks 5th in the state for aggravated assaults (meaning drunken fist fights), and is 8th in the state for number of payday loan stores per capita.

According to online forums, L-Town is a place with a ton of heroin addicts. Even the Amish are doing heroin here. White Trash Amish? That should be a reality show for sure!

5. Pottsville

Pottsville, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 13,718
Drug use: 12th
Payday loans rank: 12th

Pottsville, PA. Great beer, trashy folks. Nearly 1 in 5 residents is a poor single mama.

If you’re a dead-beat dad named Rick who snorts Tylenol, and you moved to Hazleton with your sister’s best friend, you might be from Pottsville.

Drive down a big road in Pottsville, and you’ll see a bar, then a church, a bar, a church, a bar, etc. It won’t be hard to find the trash – there certainly aren’t pregnant 17-year-olds at church.

6. McKees Rocks

McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania
Population: 6,075
Property crime rank: 1st
Crime: 9th in PA

“The Rocks” is a teeny little place right outside of Pittsburgh. The number of drug-related crimes, aggravated assaults, and high number of dropouts makes this White trash central for Allegheny County.

Plus, McKees Rocks ranks 1st in the Keystone State for number of thefts per capita. Nothing says ‘White trash’ more than stealing a lawnmower to buy some meth.

McKees Rocks has two strip clubs (Silky’s and Club Erotica). It’s the type of place where you’ll see drug deals going on inside of Citgo.

7. Corry

Corry, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 6,509
Dropout rate: 11%
Thefts per capita: 3rd

Welcome to Corry, PA, where the official vehicle is a rusted out 1987 Chevy Blazer. At least they have a college here (Mercyhurst), where folks can take a few classes before dropping out to take care of their kid(s).

Statistically, Corry ranks in the top 20 in a few categories, including number of Walmarts per capita. Corry residents who want to move up in the world make the trek to Erie to become assistant managers at Wegmans.

8. New Castle

New Castle, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 22,949
% on welfare: 25%
Check cashing stores: 13th in PA

According to online forums, New Castle is filled with slums and meth head Steeler fans. Hey don’t shoot the messenger!

Sadly, a large percentage of the New Castle population is sustained on welfare, workers comp, unemployment benefits, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

9. Towanda

York, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 43,369
% White: 48.13%
Estimated white trash: 8,293

Of course we can’t forget Towanda, where a large number of people live on disability, or work at one of the 20 or so Dollar Stores in town.

Drugs and crime are a big deal here, as are the high number of single, white mothers.

10. Dallas

Lebanon, Pennsylvania

Source: Wikipedia

Population: 25,810
Dropout rate: 25% (2nd)
Estimated white trash: 5,393

Rounding out the list of the ten most white trash cities in Pennsylvania brings us to Dallas, near Scranton. Dallas has the 3rd highest number of single white moms, and the 2nd highest dropout rate in the Commonwealth.

White trash is a lifestyle in Dallas. But if you live in Berks and Dauphin County, you have no place to judge, since there’s a good chance your cousin lives in Dallas.

Better hope they don’t need to borrow your car.

There You Have It

According to the official dictionary definition of White trash, and based on stereotypes that the internet says are true, using science to determine the most White trash cities in a state can’t be too far off.

If you’re analyzing cities in Pennsylvania with lots of angry welfare recipients, single mothers and where people have lots of options for payday cash loans, this is an accurate list.

If you’re curious enough, here are the least white trash places in Pennsylvania:

  1. Franklin Park
  2. Fox Chapel
  3. Camp Hill

  1. I don’t know where you got your information at . But your full of crap !! LEWISTOWN DOESN’T EVEN HAVE ANY PAYDAY LOAN STORES . WE HAVE A Heroin problem thats about it

  2. Screw you asshole, I grew up in Mifflin County. Who the hell are you and what gives you the right to call anyone trash. You are going to be sued.

    1. That’s right Dmarie!! And might I add..I am proud to be a coal miners daughter and granddaughter!!I hope “yous” (it’s the plural of “you”,in Skook speak) print my comment.God bless our mountain home!

  3. This is amazing! How can anyone use this kind of language to speak of people who are struggling like the people in these communities. Are there problems, absolutely! You don’t help people out of the mess they find themselves in by using such language to label them. I serve a church in the Johnstown area and we have a joy and enthusiasm to serve those in need around us. We would like people to see Johnstown as a place where people could come and settle and raise a family. This can be done if people will work together to turn the tide of poverty. People need to trust that faith is a big part of any reconciliation. If we are going to be a great area again, people need to put their faith in God and trust that there is a way to make it great here in Johnstown again.

    1. Amen, Reverend. I have worked in the social services for 35 years. I grew up near Johnstown. I served in the Altoona area as both a visiting nurse adn counselor where I went into peoples homes to work with adjudicated youth. No social situation has ever gotten better by demeaning the people involved. “Judge lest not ye be judged.”

    1. I’ve seen them in bigger cities. From what I understand they are places that provide short term, quick loans with a high fee to borrow. I’m thinking as long as you can show a paystub, you can borrow……

    2. It’s where you go to borrow money based on your pay stubs(no credit check required) at a ridiculously high interest rate and pay it back on pay day. Most people get stuck in it and continue to borrow week after week and so on.

  4. I live in Lewistown and we have no payday loan places…literally zero. While the rest is mostly accurate to varying degrees… If that is something you used to base your list on, your data is not accurate.

  5. Who ever wrote this is so ignorant. Yes, these places may be statistically the most white trash but these towns are full of families and friends, people who are content with their little slice of beautiful mountainous valleys and landacapes. This article was rude, demeaning and uncivil

  6. Shamokin is definitely not the finest of towns, but Shenandoah is definitely far worse. Lived four years in the area and was thrilled when I left the area and the state. Wanted to kiss the ground like a POW when I got to where I was going from there.

  7. It hurts to see your hometown (Johnstown) a laughingstock. “Don’t laugh, Altoona. You weren’t too far out of the top 10 yourself.” Funny. Cambria County went 67 percent for TRUMP. A community in a self-destructive tailspin that has everything to do with suburban-urban segregation. A house divided. But it’s a beautiful, verdant area populated by some of the best people I know, and well-served by some fine educational entities. And those wind turbines sprouting up in the rounded mountains of western PA speak to a future. Technology + enlightened unity can turn things around — someday.

  8. As a retired member of the U.S. Armed forces I will try to keep this comment professional. I grew up in Pottsville, Pa. and am proud of that as are my family. My parents still live in Pottsville. Dad is NOT a guy who got mom pregnant then ran off to another town. My father served this nation as a Marine. After the Marine Corps he was a truck driver and then worked at the local school. My mother was not a single mother she was once a bank teller. I have a brother that works harder than most people. I have cousin that workes for the state emergency services and has served in the armed forces for 20 years and two more family members that work as prison guards and have served in the armed forces. Yet you label them “White Trash”. You have some statistics there to indicate that Pottsville is no longer what it once was but I fail to understand how your article will improve things there. You may also way to look up Chris Nabholz. A major league pitcher that lives in Pottsville. So I suppose he too is poor white trash huh. You use Google maps to your an area, put down some facts, and that suddenly makes you an expert does it? You clearly have not spoken to residents of the area have you. You are quick to label an entire community but offer nothing to improve it. Well look in the mirror. People such as yourself are DESTROYING communities with your assumptions. You may also note that Pottsville and these other communities are mostly middle class blue collar towns that have been over worked and pay one of the HIGHEST STATE TAXES in the nation. It is clear the middle class have in fact been the ones paying more federal taxes than the rich and yet you call these people WHITE TRASH. After reading your article it is clear you are bias. Any member of the media knows a journalist is UNBIAS and presents just the facts and not there own view. You should be sued for this and I hope you find yourself in jail in this WHITE TRASH community. So nice to know that after serving my country for over 24 years, a vetran of the gulf war, people like you are eager to trash my hometown and my family. I would recommend you pack up your things, to include your narrow minded views and move to Syria, Afghanistan, or Iraq and write an article about ISIS. Or move to North Korea and write about its dictator there. Just leave we do not need close minded people that are quick to label an entire community. We need LEADERS that will do something to improve things. If you knew anything of Pottsville’s history you would know that at one time Pottsville has it’s own NFL team. The city was booming in no small part because coal was a main source of heat and fires in boilers for ships and trains. Now that the coal industry has taken a severe hit towns like Pottsville get smaller and smaller as companies move and take the jobs with them. This is happening accross the nation and yet you focus on just one area. People like you do not have an ounce of integrity and call the people of Pottsville and the surrounding areas WHITE TRASH. These same people have more moral character than you ever will. Your clearly a miserable excuse for a human being.
In closing I hope those in Pottsvile and the other areas your quick to label WHITE TRASH educate you that these communities may not be as they once were but they are still proud of what they have and close minded individuals that are quick to label an entire community are nothing more than blight on this great nation and should be deported.

  9. All cities around the country are struggling. The White Trash isn’t acceptable term to be used in this or any other article. You owe these towns an apology for the term.

  10. This is certainly fake. DALLAS MEDIAN HOUSHOLD INCOME IS OVER 83,000$/yr with the school scoring students above any state average in all subjects. The dropout rate is nearly zero. That photo is from Lebanon , Pa. Someone should do a little Google before you blog. You now look like a fool.

  11. Dallas meets only one point on your criteria……lots of white people, which can be said for many cities in the country. This writer clearly didn’t do a lot of research for this article.

  12. Obviously somebody failed geography…. because Berks and Dauphin Counties are no where near Scranton… and Dallas is an affluent suburb of Wilkes-Barre, with great diversity. I think the author meant Dallastown, Pa.

  13. Im not saying Towanda shouldnt be on the list but you listed the population as being 40,000 more than it actually is. Also the picture isnt even of Towanda.

  14. How about making your data available for the rest of us to play around with? I don’t think the average of the rank for each category of white-trashiness really gives you what you are looking for. To get the white trashiest places, you need to do principle component analysis on your unranked data set, then find the cities and town with the shortest Mahalanobis distance to a theoretical white-trash Mecca, which gets assigned the max value for each category. That will give you the cities that are closest in character to the Mecca, while accounting for covariance between categories and variance within categories. The average of ranks approach ignores the distribution of values in each category, meaning your analysis can’t tell the difference between being very far from the mean in a category and simply being the top value among a lot of closely-spaced values. It also ignores covariance between categories, meaning that your selection could be biased towards cities that rank high on several very similar (and perhaps dependent) categories, thus failing to capture the spectrum of white-trashiness observed throughout Pennsylvania.

  15. Towanda is a beautiful town. Your pictures of it weren’t even Towanda. Yes it has an underground of undesirables but it also has a lot of well to do and middle-class families that help maintain the artful and beautiful little historic town.

  16. So how about listing the top 10 Black trash cities? Oh wait that’s not PC and you probably don’t have the guts to do it

  17. Hey Niko,
Just because you have “facts” does not give you the right to call anyone white trash. I live in Bradford and I will tell you this. There are plenty of hard working men and women here. Drugs, welfare, and assaults happen in any town/ city in any state. Just because you went to college doesn’t mean you’re any better then anyone else! I’m so tired of you college folks thinking that you’re better then everyone. There are great people that live here that have big hearts! I’ll tell you what. I’ll give you a run for your money and show you how “white trash” I can be. “Catch me outside, how about that?!” Haha

  18. I don’t think it’s right to call people white trash if the are on welfare. Some people work hard and still need it. And I’ve seen rich people act like white trash.

  19. It is not uncommon and can be overcome. The first step is to realize it… This is happening throughout the lower Northeast as well as the rust belt (Look at Detroit for God’s sake). I don’t see Pittsburgh on any of the lists except one of the cities with the biggest boobs (Not sure if they are talking women on assholes or both) but 5 years ago they could have lead any of these lists. They are in the process of reinventing themselves – you van do it too.

  20. In reading your description of Shamokin I read this statement, “If you live here, and you aren’t white, you are most likely trash.” A little racist are we? In fact calling people trash and dividing up human beings by race is disturbing. This article is pointless and just exploits communities of people who are doing the best they can with the cards they’re dealt.
