How We Determined The Coolest Towns In Utah

We threw a lot of criteria at this one in order to get the best, most complete results possible. Using the most recent data from the Census’s 2014-2018 American Community Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is the criteria we used:

  • Population Density (Higher is better)
  • Lowest Unemployment Rates
  • Housing costs (Higher is better. More demand.)
  • Adjusted Median Income (Higher is better)
  • Highly Educated Adults (Higher is better)
  • Insurance Rates (Higher is better)
  • Commute Times (Lower is better)

We looked at places with populations lower than 5,000 people and greater than 1,000, of which, there were a lot – 76 to be exact.

We then ranked each place in each category with scores from 1 to 76, averaged them out, and the lowest scores went to our Best Small Towns in Utah. Top of that list — Silver Summit. You can download the data here.

  1. This really made me wonder. I am guessing that the areas like Emigration Canyon must either have people working remotely from home, or they work somewhere like SLC where that kind of income is even possible. I am always curious what people in Utah do to make that much money. My husband makes more that that in Colorado but as much as we would like to live by family, we can never move back to Utah because my husband is never able to find those kinds of well paying jobs there. I’m thinking people with those kinds of incomes in Utah must be successful business owners and entrepreneurs. I cannot think of anything in that area where someone would be making that much money otherwise.
